Despite the extraordinary performances by the Indian legendary batsmen, spinners are not so less spectacular. Most of the triumphs are gained through their hard work and consistent efforts. Even if everyone in the stadium keeps cheering for batsmen and neglects the work of spinners. You might be wondering what’s so different about a spinner as of a bowler.
To be precise and specific, to get a batter out, spinners or spin pitchers give the ball rotation. Because the spin on the ball renders it challenging to anticipate its path, especially when it jumps, spin bowlers aim to trick batters into making a mistake. Test cricket quiz also depicts the significance of a spinner in a game. Spin bowlers often bowl in the slow to fairness since speed is not essential in this kind of bowling. Nonetheless, they don’t stop hitting off the crease and make huge contributions without being noticed. Well, India has introduced a hell of a wonderful stream of cricketers who roll up their arms and just put down the wicket within a second. To know about these spinners in detail, let’s get down to it:-
- Anil Kumble-
The legends could not be forgotten of course. If anywhere the topic of spinners is initiated, Anil has to be mentioned there. By the number of wickets he had stumped down and the amazing performances in every match, he created his place in the hearts of the Indian people. Whether it’s the very beginning of the match or the critical endings where every other person watching the game relies on him, he stood up like a messiah and give his best to the country. He produced leg breaks, but his rotation was not severe; rather, he bowled very flat and at a significant pace, which proved to be lethal for many batters.
If there was even a slight gap in the surface, the batman in the frontline was sure to have a miserable day. The batters who have to face Kumble already find themselves in difficulty and are forced to start concentrating on protecting his wickets rather than striking any huge runs. Those who were fortunate enough to see him in action could attest to how diligent he used to be with each drop. Despite the fact that the contest was a dead rubber, Anil’s brave attitude will endure.
- Subhash Gupte-
The test cricket team of India has experienced really great times from 1951 to 1961 owing to the one and only Subhash Gupte who not only spin the ball but also make the whole game spin in front of the opposition without giving the slightest chance to them to win. Leg spinning is like his forte in which he stole hundreds of games to his name.
Just guess who could be the one cricketer to collect the record for striking a total of 10 wickets in all only in the 1st class innings, yes Subhash Gupte!! Not only that, if Kapil Dev didn’t perform then he could have been the spinner with the best figures known yet in India. Overall, Subhash Gupte was the showman of all those matches in which he threw his magnificent deliveries.
- Dilip Doshi-
Here is the Gujurati youngman who made his debut in the year 1979 and left everyone dumbstruck there only. His stats were quite good, 33 test matches with a whole baggage of 114 wickets, he made it all! Even before he got a chance to play for India, Doshi created his name for himself while playing exquisitely in county cricket.
Doshi was an efficient bowler on even the calmest courses because of his intelligence and endurance. Doshi’s Test career hit a brick block partly because of his tense relationship with Sunil Gavaskar, primarily during the Pakistan tour of 1982–1983. He became a mainstay on the Indian side for a while because of the success he earned in the series. He had a brief 15-game ODI career and totaled 22 wickets.
- Bhagwath Chandrasekhar-
His entry only made a huge impact on the Indian cricket team. India got his first victory in the series only because of his 12 wickets down deliveries. He has become one of the greatest Indian spinners of all time and won the Wisden Cricketer of the Year award in 1972. The famed leg spinner amassed 242 wickets in 58 Matches played for India, with the latest strike average of 29.7. Bhagwat is often seen playing with Prasanna- making a perfect duo as they triumphed in many matches together.
Chandrasekhar’s run-up was more prolonged than the usual bowlers, and the tempo of his deliveries was almost medium paced. He featured a deadly googly and, like all strong leg spinners, he also impart considerable spin and bounce.
- Axar Patel-
Axar is basically known for his sharp and rough skitters. Although he did not spin those charming twisters but still introduced every variety of spinners, Patel is a must to mention here. He can hit the deck hard by making effective use of his height, forcing batters to bring the bat down quickly. His results are remarkable considering that he has only appeared in three matches, and the game between India and England looked to be one-sided with the hitters battling it out the entire time. Not to detract from the big guy, but in the three Test matches he has featured in, he has taken a big load of 27 wickets at an astounding average of 10 points something. He has already been able to score four fives and is still giving the English team their worst nightmares whenever they came in opposition.
Now, to sum up, Indian cricket grounds tend to favor spinners to a fine rate of about 75 percent, and Indian players are often recognized as the strongest spin bowlers in the world.
- Srinivas Venkataraghavan-
Before donning the long coat, Srinivas Venkataraghavan was one of India’s top off-spinner players, and he was well-known as a recognized umpire. India used to field three, and occasionally even four, spinners in the same lineup while he was playing the game.
As he was more widely known among the famous spinners—had to stand out, and he achieved just that. Of sure, he swirled the ball, but his main tool was his relentless precision. He was challenging to dismiss, which caused batsmen to lose patience while attempting to score.
Venkat played more ODI matches than his predecessors as a result, however, he was more productive in test cricket, since he dumped 156 stumps in only 57 matches throughout.
Spin is a rare style of art that requires elite-level proficiency in order to be employed against match titans. The spinners may become frustrated if they are unable to expose the weaknesses in the batters’ defenses or surprise them, especially in the lengthier version of the game where hitters are less eager to score.
These spinners are the easiest to come by, so to speak, in a cricket world dominated by batters. Their efforts must be acknowledged and given equal credit.
