There was a time when “winter homes” and “seasonal residents” were mainly retirees from the northern states who just didn’t want to grapple with the cold, and snowy days of winter. While a good percentage of winter residents are, indeed, retirees, there is a growing younger population that also own winter homes in Miami because that is where the business is at that time of year.
Many are in the hospitality industry while others are small business entrepreneurs in retail that seek the busiest seasonal markets. Whether you are a retired “snowbird” or an entrepreneur following the business migration southward, here are some much needed tips on home décor for your winter home in Miami.
When Comfort Is Your Primary Goal
Oddly, the one thing that even Miami lifers will admit would be the fact that the winter months in South Florida are the most comfortable of all. You don’t experience those ultra-hot and humid days of summer as it is just cool enough, without being freezing cold, to enjoy the area. It doesn’t matter if you are a retiree or a young retailer, coming home after a day out and about, it’s nice to be able to lounge for a bit in a comfy living area. Consider investing in the ultimate comfort of a Comfy Sacks Chill Sack bean bag chair and you can literally flop down into one after a long day out. Any and all furniture should be chosen for comfort. That, after all, is what life in the Sunshine State is all about!
Keep Clutter to a Minimum
Also, don’t overdo it with décor! Bear in mind that within a few short months, too short a time at that, you will be packing up to head back northward again. You will not want to leave too much stuff lying about that can get dusty over time, and it really will. You don’t want to come back next winter only to spend days dusting all those knickknacks, will you?
The one thought on your mind is taking a load off! You just want to spend your first days in comfort, not in going back to work. For you retailers, that will come soon enough and for you retirees, you’ve left the workday behind, so don’t make it harder on yourselves than you need to!
Minimize Use of Valuable Décor
There is one other key point about home décor in Miami. Remember, those months you are gone up north will be hurricane season. Yes, you probably have insurance to cover the cost of replacing anything lost in a storm, but do you really want to? No one really wants to look at facing the heavy losses sustained during a hurricane, but it is, after all, in hurricane alley!
Thankfully, very few strong hurricanes have come through the area, but if one should hit, any valuable bits of décor like that Faberge egg you just had to have could be smashed to kingdom come. If you must have costly décor, you might want to store it in a unit built to withstand high winds or take them with you. Actually, there have only been four major storms to ever hit the US and Andrew was the last Cat 5 to directly impact Miami way back 30 years ago.
It’s Miami After All – So Enjoy!
Even so, do you really want to do all that packing? You’re here for the winter to enjoy the warmth and comfort only southernmost cities enjoy so don’t make it harder than you have to. Keep it simple and you will have that much more time to spend on relaxing pursuits. That, in the end, is the key to Miami home décor.
